Seeking to strengthen ties with retired officers, Inspector Genral of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu has appealed to members of the Police Veterans Foundation to guide upcoming officers with their wealth of experience while helping address grievances among retirees nationwide.
The Inspector-General of Police made the appeal on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from the Police Veterans Foundation at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The delegation was led by the Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, DIG Yesufu M.A. (rtd).
During the meeting, the veterans called for formal institutional recognition, expanded nationwide outreach, improved welfare programmes for retired personnel, and the resolution of lingering administrative challenges affecting former officers.
Responding, the IGP commended the veterans for their continued commitment to the growth and stability of the Nigeria Police Force despite having retired from active service.
“Our retired officers remain a vital part of the policing family. Their experience, institutional memory, and sacrifices over the years are invaluable assets that must continue to benefit the Force and the nation,” Disu said.
He urged members of the foundation to take active interest in mentoring younger officers, noting that professionalism, discipline, and ethical conduct within the Force could be strengthened through closer engagement between serving and retired personnel.
“I encourage you to continue guiding the younger generation of officers while also reaching out to retirees who may have grievances or welfare concerns. No officer who has served this country diligently should feel abandoned,” the IGP stated.
Disu further assured the delegation that efforts were ongoing to improve the welfare structure for both serving and retired officers, disclosing that a revised Scheme of Service for the Nigeria Police Force was nearing final approval.
According to him, the reform is expected to address critical career and welfare issues while enhancing professionalism and institutional efficiency within the Force.
The IGP reiterated the commitment of the police leadership to building a more inclusive and supportive system that recognises the sacrifices of officers both in active service and retirement.
Earlier, DIG Yesufu M.A. (rtd), on behalf of the Police Veterans Foundation, commended the IGP for his reform-driven leadership and expressed the readiness of retired officers to continue supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening policing and national security.
