President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to restore peace, strengthen security nationwide, and rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force, assuring him of full presidential backing.
The President gave the charge on Wednesday at the State House, Abuja, during the decoration of Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, following the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun and pending ratification of the appointment by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Disu’s appointment as coming at a critical moment for national security, urging him to lead with firmness, fairness and professionalism.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said.
Tinubu urged the Acting IGP to prioritise public safety and foster collaboration with other security agencies to address growing security challenges.
“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” he stated.
The President further tasked Disu to advance the security objectives of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in his discipline, operational experience and leadership capacity.
“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” Tinubu said.
He reaffirmed his belief that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges under committed leadership.
Tinubu also paid glowing tribute to the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony with his spouse, acknowledging his contributions to maintaining law and order.
“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” he said.
He urged Egbetokun to remain available to advise his successor, describing Disu’s success as part of Egbetokun’s legacy.
“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” the President added, while wishing Egbetokun and his family peace, good health and success in future endeavours.
Tinubu further called on all security stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard lives and property during what he described as a critical period for the nation.
The decoration ceremony was attended by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; retired AIG Hakeem Odumosu; senior government officials, as well as Disu’s parents and family members.
The Nigeria Police Council is expected to meet next week to consider Disu’s appointment, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation as substantive Inspector-General of Police.
