Forty-one travelers, including seven children, have been rescued by Nigerian troops after they were reportedly abducted when their vehicle broke down in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The travelers were rescued by troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, following a prompt response to actionable intelligence on the incident.
According to a report shared on the social media handle of the Nigerian Army, the commercial vehicle conveying the victims from Senegal to Kano State developed a mechanical fault along the highway.
The armed group reportedly took advantage of the situation to target the stranded vehicle and attempted to move the occupants into the surrounding area.
Acting on the intelligence, the troops swiftly mobilised to the scene and engaged the armed group, forcing the suspects to abandon the hostages and flee into nearby farmlands.
The rescued travelers comprised 24 males, 10 females and seven children. They were rescued unharmed and are currently receiving necessary support before being reunited with their families and transit authorities.
The troops have also maintained an active presence in the area to ensure the safety of travelers and support efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
