The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has clarified that it has not increased student fees, explaining that the recent changes seen on students’ portals were made in line with a directive from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund).
The clarification followed complaints from students on Tuesday who noticed an upward adjustment in some charges, sparking concerns of a possible fee hike.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Head of the Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said the changes reflect the integration of faculty and departmental dues into a consolidated payment system, as instructed by NELFund.
“This ensures that once students make payment through their official portal, no other payment will be collected at the faculty and departmental levels,” Alaga-Ibraheem explained.
According to the university, the adjustment is aimed at creating transparency and a single payment channel for all student-related charges.
While UNILAG insisted that there was no major fee increase, it confirmed that some charges were adjusted and new ones introduced for the 2024/2025 academic session.
Previously, returning students paid ₦2,000 for department and faculty dues, which has now been consolidated into a ₦15,000 charge on the student portal.A breakdown of the new structure shows that the UNILAG TISHIP (health insurance) fee increased from ₦5,000 to ₦7,500, while new charges include entrepreneurship (₦5,000), portal maintenance (₦15,000), and student insurance policy (₦1,250).
Other components listed are student support services (₦1,250), professional services (₦7,500), and general studies (GST) (₦5,000).
The university urged students and parents to remain calm, assuring that the changes were administrative and not intended to impose additional financial burdens beyond what was approved under the NELFund harmonization framework.
