The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has issued a stern warning to residents against the destruction or tampering of parking signages across the state, declaring that such actions now attract serious legal consequences under Nigerian law.
Speaking at a press conference held on Friday in Lagos, the agency’s General Manager, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, emphasized the critical role of parking signages in promoting orderly parking culture, ensuring smooth traffic flow, and enhancing public safety.
According to a statement issued by Dunkwu Divine, Head of Public Affairs at LASPA, Adelabu noted that the signages—strategically placed in key areas—are integral to the state’s modern parking system and must not be interfered with under any circumstances.
“Parking signages are public infrastructure installed to guide motorists, regulate parking, and maintain order on Lagos roads,” Adelabu said. “
Any act of destruction or interference is not only condemnable but also criminal.”She cited Chapter 17, Section 35 of the Nigerian Criminal Law Code, which classifies the unlawful tampering or removal of public or private property as a felony, punishable upon conviction by up to three years imprisonment.
“Vandalism of these signages disrupts traffic, threatens public safety, and creates inconvenience for motorists. It is a serious offense, and offenders will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” she warned.
Adelabu reiterated LASPA’s commitment to improving the state’s parking infrastructure and disclosed plans to deploy additional signages across more locations in Lagos in the coming weeks.
She urged residents to remain vigilant and report any cases of vandalism or suspicious activity related to the parking infrastructure to relevant authorities, assuring that all credible reports would be acted upon promptly.
“LASPA strongly condemns these acts of sabotage and will ensure that perpetrators are identified and brought to justice,” she concluded
