‎United States on Friday night joined fellow host nation Mexico in securing qualification for the Round of 32 of the ongoing FIFA World Cup after just two matches.

The race for places in the knockout stage gathered momentum as the two North American hosts became the first teams to guarantee progression from their respective groups following impressive starts to the tournament.

Mexico sealed qualification from Group A after recording consecutive victories, opening their campaign with a 2-0 win over South Africa before edging South Korea 1-0. The six-point haul ensures El Tri will finish among the qualifying teams in the group, irrespective of the outcome of their final fixture against Czechia.

The United States matched that achievement in Group D, maintaining a perfect start to its campaign. The Americans began with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Paraguay and followed it up with a 2-0 triumph over Australia to move on to six points and book a place in the Round of 32 with a game to spare.

Several other nations also strengthened their qualification hopes ahead of the decisive final round of group matches.

In Group B, co-hosts Canada and Switzerland are well-positioned to advance after collecting four points from their opening two games. Canada underlined its credentials with a resounding 6-0 victory over Qatar, while Switzerland boosted its prospects with a convincing 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Group C remains one of the most closely contested sections of the tournament. Brazil and Morocco are level at the top on four points after unbeaten starts, while Scotland remains firmly in contention with three points. Brazil revived its campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Haiti, while Morocco enhanced its chances by securing a narrow 1-0 win over Scotland.

Germany produced one of the standout performances of the tournament so far in Group E, thrashing Curacao 7-1 to underline its title credentials. Ivory Coast also made a winning start, setting up what could prove to be a decisive encounter between the two sides.

In Group F, Sweden leads the standings after a commanding 5-1 rout of Tunisia. The Netherlands and Japan remain within touching distance after sharing the points in a 2-2 draw.

The battle for qualification remains finely balanced in Groups G and H, where all four teams are level on points after their opening matches, leaving the race for the knockout rounds wide open.

France and Norway have seized the early initiative in Group I following victories over Senegal and Iraq, respectively, while defending champions Argentina sit atop Group J after a convincing 3-0 win over Algeria. Austria is level on points after defeating Jordan 3-1.

In Group K, Colombia leads the standings after a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan, while Portugal and DR Congo remain in contention following a draw in the group’s other fixture.

Group L has also produced two early frontrunners, with England defeating Croatia 4-2 and Ghana edging Panama 1-0 to begin their campaigns on a winning note.

Under FIFA’s expanded 48-team World Cup format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will progress to the Round of 32.

With only Mexico and the United States having mathematically secured qualification so far, attention now turns to the final round of group matches, where several nations will battle to keep their World Cup dreams alive and claim places in the knockout phase.
