Seeking to reinforce Nigeria’s internal security architecture and strengthen intelligence coordination, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has created the Office of Homeland Security and appointed retired Major General Adeyinka Fadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security.

The appointment, approved by the President, was conveyed in a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.

According to a statement issued on Monday by Head, Information & Public Relations, Secretary to the Federal Government, Chris Ugwuegbulam, the creation of the new office underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to strengthening internal security coordination, enhancing intelligence-driven operations, and deepening inter-agency collaboration in tackling emerging security threats across the country.

“The appointment reflects the administration’s resolve to improve national security coordination through enhanced intelligence integration, proactive risk management, and stronger inter-agency cooperation,” Ugwuegbulam noted.

“Major General Fadewa (Rtd), a highly decorated retired senior military officer, brings more than three decades of experience in military operations, intelligence coordination, counter-terrorism strategy, and international security diplomacy,” he added.

The statement described Fadewa as “a seasoned strategist whose career reflects operational excellence, strategic foresight, and institutional leadership in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national interests.”

Fadewa previously served as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) between 2015 and 2021, where he played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s intelligence coordination framework.

During his tenure, he spearheaded the establishment of the Intelligence Fusion Centre (IFC) at ONSA, an integrated multi-agency platform designed to improve national threat assessment and strategic response coordination among security agencies.

The platform brought together the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces to enhance intelligence sharing and operational synergy.

“His contributions to intelligence fusion and strategic coordination significantly strengthened the nation’s security response architecture,” the statement added.

Following his retirement from active service, Fadewa served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, where he continued to provide policy and strategic guidance on policing, civil-security cooperation, and national security reforms.

He is also credited with authoring the widely acclaimed monograph, “Policing and National Security in Nigeria,” which outlines practical frameworks for improving collaboration between civil authorities and security institutions.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that the appointment would further strengthen the administration’s efforts to achieve a safer and more secure Nigeria.

“The President believes that Major General Fadewa’s wealth of experience, professionalism, and strategic insight will greatly support ongoing efforts to improve homeland security coordination and advance the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement said.

Tinubu also urged the retired General to deploy his expertise toward enhancing intelligence integration, proactive threat management, and national security policy implementation across relevant institutions.

The appointment forms part of broader reforms by the Federal Government aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s security framework to better address evolving threats and improve coordination among security and intelligence agencies nationwide.
