The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the development as a tragic loss to both the state and the nation.
The government said the former senior military officer died in captivity despite sustained efforts by security agencies and the state government to secure his freedom.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, the government expressed deep sorrow over the retired general’s death, which it attributed to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.
“The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar,” Mu’azu said.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy.”
According to the commissioner, medical complications linked to the deceased’s underlying health conditions led to his death while being held by his abductors.
“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” he stated.
Mu’azu described the late military officer’s abduction and death as a significant national loss, noting that his contributions to the country during his years of service would not be forgotten.
“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country,” he said.
The commissioner disclosed that Governor Dikko Umaru Radda had extended his condolences to the bereaved family and condemned the circumstances surrounding the retired officer’s death.
Quoting the governor, Mu’azu said the incident represented “a dark moment” for the state and underscored the urgent need for stronger collective action against criminal groups operating across communities.
“The Governor has described this incident as a dark moment and a reminder of the urgent need for a collective and intensified front against the criminal elements threatening the peace of our communities,” the statement added.
The state government reiterated its commitment to partnering with the Federal Government and security agencies to combat banditry and ensure that those responsible for the crime are brought to justice.
“The Katsina State Government remains committed to working with the Federal Government and security forces to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice,” Mu’azu said.
“We assure the citizens of Katsina State that our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken.”
He added that the government’s thoughts and prayers were with the family of the deceased during the difficult period, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Major General Abubakar’s death is the latest reminder of the security challenges facing parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnappings and bandit attacks have continued to pose significant threats to lives and livelihoods despite ongoing military and security operations.
