The Delta State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Secondary Education, Mr Unity Adeda, following a complaint over an alleged assault at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education in Asaba.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this on Friday, saying one person had been arrested in connection with the incident while efforts were ongoing to apprehend two others named in the complaint.
According to Edafe, the complaint alleged that Adeda was beaten during an incident at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu.
He said three aides to the commissioner were named in the complaint as allegedly involved in the incident.
Edafe identified them as Enos Attah, Oputa Okestine and Lucky Adoh, adding that Adoh had been arrested while efforts were ongoing to apprehend the other two.
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Erale, had directed the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death.
He said investigators would examine available evidence, including video recordings, eyewitness accounts and medical records, to establish what transpired.
According to Edafe, the actions of all persons connected with the incident would be examined before the police determine whether anyone was culpable.
Earle assured the deceased’s family that the command would conduct the investigation professionally and without interference.
He said anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, irrespective of the person’s status or position.
The Commissioner appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid reaching conclusions before the completion of the investigation.
He also commiserated with Adeda’s family over his death.
