An officer of the Delta State Police Command has been detained and moved to Abuja to face disciplinary proceedings following the alleged extra-judicial killing of a suspect in Effurun.
    ‎
‎The Command confirmed that the incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, involved the death of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, during a police operation.
    ‎
‎According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, strongly condemned the act, describing it as a clear violation of established rules and operational procedures.
    ‎
‎“The Commissioner of Police condemns in strong terms the extra-judicial killing of the suspect and reiterates that such conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Edafe stated.
    ‎
‎He explained that the incident followed credible intelligence received from members of the public regarding the deceased, who was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
    ‎
‎“Operatives attached to Area Command Effurun were promptly deployed to take the suspect into custody. However, the officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure by discharging his firearm, resulting in the death of the suspect,” he said.
    ‎
‎Edafe disclosed that upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police immediately ordered the arrest of the officer and his transfer to the State Headquarters in Asaba.
    ‎
‎“Following preliminary findings, the officer was queried and subsequently transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee currently in session for immediate disciplinary action and possible prosecution,” he added.
    ‎
‎Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to professionalism and accountability, Edafe stressed that the Nigeria Police Force maintains zero tolerance for misconduct.
    ‎
‎“The Command emphasizes its commitment to the rule of law, respect for human rights, and adherence to professional standards. Acts of recklessness, lawlessness, and extra-judicial conduct will be met with decisive disciplinary measures,” he said.
    ‎
‎The police spokesperson further conveyed the condolences of the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, to the family of the deceased.
    ‎
‎“The Commissioner extends his heartfelt condolences to the family of Mene Ogidi and assures them that the Command is fully committed to ensuring that justice is served,” Edafe noted.
    ‎
‎He also appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement authorities as investigations and disciplinary processes continue.
    ‎
‎“We urge members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and allow the due process of the law to take its course, as all necessary steps are being taken to bring the officer involved to justice,” he said.
    ‎
‎The Command reiterated that it would continue to uphold public trust by ensuring transparency and accountability in all its operations.
