President Bola Tinubu has approved a cabinet reshuffle affecting two critical ministries, relieving the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, of their duties.

The development was formally communicated in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Yomi Odunuga, citing an official memo signed by the SGF, George Akume.

According to the directive, Taiwo Oyedele has been appointed as the new Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, while Dr.Muttaqha Darma has been named Minister-designate for Housing and Urban Development.

The memo further directed the outgoing ministers to immediately commence handover processes, with all transition activities expected to be concluded on or before the close of business on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

Providing insight into the decision, Akume said the reshuffle was part of deliberate efforts by the administration to strengthen policy coordination and enhance service delivery in line with the government’s reform agenda.

“These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion and synergy in governance, as well as achieving more impactful economic outcomes for Nigerians under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the SGF stated.

He added that the President exercised his constitutional authority in effecting the changes, in accordance with Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empower the President to appoint and reassign members of the Federal Executive Council.

Akume also conveyed President Tinubu’s appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their contributions to national development, noting that their service to the administration and the country is duly acknowledged.

“The President thanks the affected ministers for their service and wishes them success in their future endeavours,” he said, adding that the process of repositioning the cabinet remains ongoing.

The reshuffle comes amid sustained efforts by the Tinubu administration to recalibrate economic management and accelerate reforms across key sectors, particularly in the face of inflationary pressures, fiscal constraints, and ongoing structural adjustments in the economy.

Observers note that the Ministry of Finance plays a central role in shaping macroeconomic policy, managing public debt, and coordinating fiscal reforms, making leadership changes in the ministry especially significant.

Similarly, the Housing and Urban Development Ministry has been pivotal to the government’s infrastructure and urban renewal drive, including efforts to address Nigeria’s housing deficit estimated in the millions.

Until his new appointment, Oyedele had served as Minister of State for Finance, a role he assumed in March 2026, where he was involved in tax policy reforms and fiscal strategy discussions.

Edun, on the other hand, was among the pioneer members of Tinubu’s cabinet inaugurated on August 16, 2023, and had overseen key economic policy decisions during a period marked by major reforms, including subsidy removal and exchange rate adjustments.

The latest changes signal a renewed push by the administration to consolidate gains, address emerging challenges, and inject fresh momentum into its economic and development priorities.
