The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of a Police Officer and a scavenger at Ilubirin, inward Simpson, on Lagos Island.
According to Taofiq Adebayo, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment, LASTMA, preliminary investigations showed that the driver of a Toyota Camry with registration number MUS 885 JA was travelling at excessive speed when he lost control, veered off his lane and struck the two victims – the Police man, who was on a motorcycle and the scavenger who was nearby.
Adebayo said the impact was severe, leading to their instant death.
He explained that LASTMA personnel stationed around the Ilubirin axis immediately secured the scene, diverted traffic, and moved to prevent a secondary accident.
He added that the driver attempted to flee but was apprehended by LASTMA officers and handed over to operatives of the Adeniji Adele Police Division for further investigation and prosecution.
Adebayo also confirmed that the accidented vehicle had been evacuated to restore traffic flow in the area.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, visited the scene and commiserated with the families and colleagues of the deceased. He described the incident as a painful reminder of the tragic consequences of reckless driving.
Bakare-Oki urged motorists to maintain discipline on the road and adhere strictly to approved speed limits, noting that speeding remains one of the leading causes of avoidable road fatalities.
He reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to sustained public enlightenment on safe driving culture and appealed to road users, especially commercial and private motorists, to adopt responsible driving habits to prevent future tragedies.
