A Lagos resident, Nelly Monday, 53, arrested for allegedly dumping waste into a drainage channel during rainfall in Meiran, has been sentenced to one month in prison by a Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi.
Monday was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she was found dumping waste into a drainage channel during rainfall.
She was subsequently arraigned before the court, where she pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to one month in prison.
The conviction is part of efforts by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and other relevant enforcement agencies to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and protect the state’s drainage infrastructure.
LAWMA warned residents against dumping refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations, stressing that such acts constitute environmental offences that attract sanctions under the law.
The authority said it would continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.
It urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly and through approved channels, warning against practices that could obstruct drainage systems and contribute to flooding.
