Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Tuesday led tributes to three police officers killed in the line of duty in Zamfara State, declaring that their sacrifice would strengthen ongoing security operations against banditry and violent crime across the state.
The IGP made the declaration during a working visit to Zamfara State, where he joined officers, bereaved families, government officials and members of the public at the Islamic funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) held in honour of the fallen personnel.
Disu also visited the Zamfara State Police Command to commiserate with officers and men of the command and reaffirm the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to restoring peace and security across the state.
The police chief was received by senior government officials and security stakeholders, including the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Mallam Abubakar Nakwada, who represented Governor Dauda Lawal at the funeral and related engagements.
Speaking during the visit, the IGP described the deceased officers as brave and selfless personnel who paid the ultimate price while defending citizens against criminal elements threatening the peace of Zamfara State.
”The fallen officers displayed uncommon courage, dedication and patriotism in the discharge of their duties. Their sacrifice represents the highest form of service to the nation and will never be forgotten by the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
According to him, the loss of the officers, though painful, would further strengthen the resolve of the Force to sustain aggressive operations against bandits, kidnappers and other violent criminals operating within the state and beyond.
”We mourn our colleagues today, but we will not allow their deaths to weaken our determination. Instead, their sacrifice will inspire greater commitment and renewed vigour in our ongoing efforts to secure Zamfara State and protect innocent citizens,” the IGP stated.
Addressing officers and men of the command, Disu urged them to remain focused, disciplined and professional despite the challenges associated with policing in conflict-prone areas.
”The greatest honour we can give our fallen heroes is to continue the work they died defending. We must remain steadfast, resilient and united in the pursuit of peace, justice and security for all Nigerians,” he said.
The IGP also commended the Zamfara State Police Command for its recent operational successes, including the arrest of criminal suspects, recovery of explosives and other dangerous materials, rescue of kidnapped victims, recovery of stolen motorcycles and successful offensives against armed bandits.
He noted that the achievements underscored the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing, operational commitment and collaboration among security agencies.
”The successes recorded by the command demonstrate that sustained intelligence gathering, strategic deployment of resources and inter-agency cooperation remain critical tools in addressing emerging security threats,” he said.
Disu assured officers that the Force Headquarters would continue to strengthen operational capacity through improved logistics, welfare packages and provision of resources required for effective policing.
”We remain committed to enhancing the welfare and operational readiness of our personnel. Our officers deserve the necessary support, equipment and motivation to carry out their constitutional responsibilities effectively,” he added.
The Inspector-General further stressed the importance of community partnership and public support in the fight against insecurity, noting that security challenges could only be effectively addressed through collective action.
”Policing is most effective when communities and security agencies work together. We urge residents to continue providing useful information that will assist security forces in identifying and neutralising criminal elements,” he said.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to supporting personnel, honouring the memory of fallen officers and intensifying efforts to combat banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
