A commercial bus driver has escaped possible prosecution after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) uncovered Colos and methamphetamine concealed in a bottle of Fearless energy drink he was given as a waybill package from Lagos to Ondo State.
The Director, Media and Advocacy of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a post shared on his social media handle on Sunday.
Babafemi said the driver spent some time in custody after accepting the package, believing that the bottle contained an energy drink.
He said the incident showed the danger of accepting parcels without knowing their contents, noting that the driver “would have ended in jail because he assumed a bottle of Fearless energy drink given him as a waybill package in Lagos to deliver in Ondo State actually contains energy drink.”
According to him, the bottle was used to conceal Colos and methamphetamine, but NDLEA officers were able to track and arrest the person who handed the package to the driver.
Babafemi said the driver “may be lucky to have escaped jail” because the officers who discovered the drugs were able to trace the person responsible for the package.
He warned that others might not be as fortunate, saying, “your own case may be devoid of such luck and you go in for it.”
Babafemi therefore advised commercial drivers and other members of the public to avoid accepting parcels whose contents they do not know, stressing that possession of illicit drugs could attract legal consequences.
“As drivers or whoever, please avoid taking parcels you don’t know its content because possession makes you culpable, that’s the law and you go explain tire!” he warned.
