President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC) to drive the execution of the administration’s landmark tax reforms aimed at strengthening public finance management and supporting economic growth.
In a statement, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the committee will be chaired by Mr. Joseph Tegbe, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, with over 35 years of professional experience, including his tenure as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa.
According to Onanuga, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, will oversee the committee’s work, while Sanyade Okoli, Special Adviser to the President on Finance and Economy, will serve as Secretary. Other members include Ismaeel Ahmed, Rukaiya El-Rufai and a diverse team of experts from the public and private sectors.
Onanuga quoted the President as saying that effective implementation of the new tax laws is central to the government’s economic transformation agenda.
“These new Tax Acts reflect our administration’s commitment to building a fair, transparent, and technology-driven tax system that supports economic growth while protecting the interests of citizens and businesses,” Onanuga quoted Tinubu as saying.
“The National Tax Policy Implementation Committee will ensure coherent, effective, and well-aligned implementation across all levels of government.”
He added that the committee will conduct extensive nationwide consultations across the private sector, professional bodies and subnational governments, alongside public awareness campaigns to support the rollout of the new tax framework.
The NTPIC will also strengthen inter-agency coordination by aligning revenue and regulatory institutions, harmonising existing frameworks with new statutes and ensuring unified oversight throughout the transition.
Onanuga said the committee’s chairman, Tegbe, expressed the team’s commitment to delivering on its mandate.
“We understand the strategic importance of these Tax Acts. Our committee will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure seamless implementation and build public trust in the tax system,” he quoted Tegbe as saying.
Edun, who will supervise the committee, also welcomed the President’s approval.
“With the establishment of this Committee, Mr President has set the direction and provided the authority to reset not just the tax system but the entire fiscal policy framework to deliver significant economic growth for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Onanuga quoted the minister as saying.
The committee is expected to enhance revenue mobilisation, reduce leakages and entrench transparency in support of national development goals.
