The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has said modern policing must be anchored on professionalism, public trust, and community collaboration, noting that citizens remain central to effective law enforcement operations across the country.
Disu stated this during a meeting with the Governor of Edo State at the State House, where he reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention, and people-focused law enforcement.
The IGP stressed that effective policing can only succeed where there is mutual trust and cooperation between the police and members of the public.
According to him, security remains a collective responsibility that requires sustained collaboration among law enforcement agencies, government institutions, traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and citizens.
“The people are the masters,” Disu declared.
“Policing works best when citizens willingly cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Without the trust and support of the people, policing becomes more difficult and less effective.”
He noted that the Force under his leadership is focused on building stronger community partnerships aimed at improving intelligence gathering, enhancing public confidence, and promoting safer communities nationwide.
The IGP disclosed that all Commissioners of Police across the country have been directed to make their phone numbers publicly accessible to members of the public in order to improve communication, accessibility, and accountability.
“We want citizens to have direct access to their Commissioners of Police. We want the people to feel heard and protected,” he said.
“Police officers must build healthy and respectful relationships with the communities they serve because modern policing is driven by intelligence, professionalism, transparency, and public consent.”
Disu further emphasized the importance of respecting citizens’ rights and ensuring professionalism in police operations.
According to him, officers have been encouraged to always explain the reasons behind arrests or police actions taken against individuals, in line with global best practices and the principles of human rights.
“It is important that members of the public understand why certain actions are taken by law enforcement officers. Respect for human rights and procedural transparency are essential components of professional policing,” he stated.
The IGP also highlighted the Force’s renewed focus on intelligence-led operations and proactive strategies designed to tackle emerging security threats and improve public safety across the country.
“Our focus remains intelligence policing and proactive crime prevention. We are working to strengthen operational efficiency while also improving the relationship between the police and the people,” he added.
In his remarks, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo commended the IGP for what he described as his professionalism, calm disposition, and civil approach to leadership.
Okpebholo said the evolving reforms within the Nigeria Police Force under Disu’s leadership were gradually restoring public confidence in policing and improving police-community relations.
“We appreciate the professionalism and maturity the IGP has brought into policing,” the governor stated.
“His leadership style reflects civility, discipline, and a genuine commitment to reforming the Force and improving public trust.”
The governor pledged the continued support and cooperation of the Edo State Government toward the Nigeria Police Force and emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between security agencies and state authorities in addressing security challenges.
