The Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), has intensified efforts to promote environmental sustainability with a large-scale clean-up exercise across parts of the council area aimed at reducing flood risks, improving sanitation and safeguarding public health.
The exercise, which formed part of the council’s weekly environmental sanitation programme, was carried out on Thursday in Anifowoshe Community and along Ilori Moses Street, where the chairman led council officials in the evacuation of refuse and debris from blocked drainage channels.
Overgrown weeds were also cleared during the exercise to restore the free flow of water and reduce the risk of flooding in the affected areas.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Ikeja Local Government, Olalekan Oni, the exercise underscored the administration’s commitment to maintaining a clean, safe and healthy environment for residents.
“The exercise took place in Anifowoshe Community and along Ilori Moses Street, where refuse and debris were evacuated from blocked drainage channels. Overgrown weeds were also cleared, thereby restoring the free flow of water and reducing the risk of flooding in the affected areas,” Oni said.
Speaking during the exercise, AKOD urged residents to desist from indiscriminate disposal of refuse into drainage channels, warning that such practices contribute significantly to flooding and environmental degradation.
“The Chairman charged residents to desist from indiscriminate disposal of waste in drainage channels, noting that such acts remain a major cause of flooding within the Anifowoshe Community and other parts of Ikeja,” Oni stated.
The council chairman stressed that environmental cleanliness remains critical to public health and sustainable development.
“The Chairman emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean environment, stressing that environmental cleanliness is essential for preventing diseases, promoting public health and enhancing the overall well-being of residents,” the statement added.
Also present during the exercise was the Head of Department, Environment and Sanitation, Sanitarian Omotayo, who led officials of the department in ensuring the smooth execution of the sanitation operation.
According to Oni, the local government remains committed to environmental sustainability and will continue to implement measures aimed at keeping the council area clean and habitable.
“Chairman AKOD reiterated his administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability and urged residents to partner with the Local Government in keeping Ikeja clean, safe and habitable for all,” he said.
The latest exercise comes amid increased efforts by local authorities across Lagos State to clear drainage channels and improve environmental sanitation ahead of the peak of the rainy season, when blocked waterways often contribute to flooding in several communities.
Ikeja Local Government has consistently maintained weekly sanitation and environmental maintenance programmes as part of broader efforts to improve public health, prevent environmental hazards and enhance the quality of life of residents.
