The Lagos State Government has approved car refurbishment and housing loans for 265 teachers in demonstration of its commitment to improving the welfare of teachers in the state.
The approval was granted at the bi-annual meeting of the Teachers Loan Board held at the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) headquarters, Ikeja, and presided over by the Permanent Secretary, TESCOM, Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila.
Speaking at the meeting, Oyekan-Ismaila reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of both teaching and non-teaching staff, stressing that such interventions are crucial for retaining skilled educators and reinforcing their commitment to shaping the future of students.
She highlighted Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s upward review of the car refurbishment loan for senior-level management officers from ₦100,000 to ₦500,000 and for junior-level officers from ₦30,000 to ₦100,000, describing the move as a significant step towards wider staff inclusion in the scheme.
Oyekan-Ismaila further revealed that the government is actively considering an upward review of housing loans as recommended by the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), noting that the proposal is already receiving attention.
She urged the beneficiaries to utilize the loans judiciously in ways that would positively impact their productivity and ultimately improve learning outcomes for students.
Also speaking, the Director of Teachers Welfare Department, TESCOM, Mr. Akinwande Festus, emphasized that robust welfare packages are directly linked to job satisfaction, motivation, and retention of skilled teachers.
He noted that the scheme has been instrumental in uplifting the living standards of both teaching and non-teaching staff across the state.
The Teachers Loan Board considers loan applications for housing and car refurbishment from staff across the Education Districts, the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), and TESCOM, with disbursement handled by the State Treasury Office, Alausa.
