Lagos State’s Commissioner for Home Affairs, Olanrewaju Layode, on Monday led a multi-agency task force in dismantling unauthorised checkpoints along the busy Lagos–Badagry Expressway, aiming to reduce gridlock and enhance road safety.

The operation followed a high-level meeting between Layode and officials from the Nigerian Army, Police, Customs, Civil Defence Corps, and a representative of the Akran of Badagry.

Layode stressed the urgency of the operation, saying reports tied the checkpoints to excessive congestion and, in some cases, serious accidents, including a recent fatal crash at Atura where a bus reportedly collided with a trailer stopped at an unauthorised checkpoint.

“These are unnecessary tragedies we must prevent,” Layode emphasised, adding that Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu had directed swift action in response to rising accident rates along the corridor.

Participants in the initiative included commanders from the 243 Battalion, 15 Engineer Regiment, the Seme Border Patrol, and local police divisions from Badagry and Morogbo, all of whom committed to sustaining checkpoint reforms.

Layode thanked security agencies for their cooperation and pledged to update the Governor on the operation’s efficacy and next steps to maintain a safer and more efficient transport route.
