The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed off the malfunctioning sewage and wastewater treatment facility of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) for illegally discharging raw sewage into the environment.
According to the agency, the action followed several letters of warning issued to the institution, which were ignored. The LSWMO stated that the college’s continuous release of untreated effluent posed serious risks to public health and contravened the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.
The Office reaffirmed the State Government’s zero tolerance for all forms of environmental infractions, particularly those endangering public health and undermining the State’s efforts toward a sustainable and hygienic environment.
The government, through the LSWMO, reiterated its commitment to enforcing compliance with wastewater management standards and warned other institutions and facilities to ensure proper operation and maintenance of their treatment plants or face similar sanctions.
