The Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of Itedo Market in Lekki following repeated cases of environmental infractions and illegal roadside trading.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Saturday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating that the action was part of the state’s ongoing enforcement drive to restore environmental order and protect public safety.
According to Wahab, five individuals were arrested during the enforcement operation for violating state environmental laws, while three Black Maria vans have been deployed to the area to deter further illegal activities and maintain law and order.
He reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental abuse, stressing that Lagos would not condone actions that compromise cleanliness, safety, or public decorum.
“Lagos will not tolerate disregard for environmental regulations or unauthorized street trading. Our commitment to restoring sanity, ensuring public safety, and upholding the rule of law remains unwavering,” Wahab stated.
The commissioner reaffirmed that the ongoing clampdown on markets and traders violating environmental standards across the state will continue as part of efforts to sustain a cleaner, safer, and more organized Lagos.
