The Lagos State Sports Commission has reaffirmed its decision to dissolve the Senior Team Lagos, stressing that the move is aimed at repositioning sports in the state by injecting discipline, merit, and renewed competitive spirit.
Director General of the Commission expressed concern over the conduct of some purported members of the dissolved team, who recently staged a protest at the Alausa Secretariat.
The protesters, he noted, made “unjustified” demands for financial rewards despite the team’s underwhelming performances at the 2020 and 2024 National Sports Festivals.
“This decision was not taken lightly. It was informed by the disappointing outcomes of Senior Team Lagos at the National Sports Festival and the need to reposition Lagos sports for excellence,” the DG stated.
“We are committed to building a system that celebrates merit, hard work, and dedication. The dissolution paves the way for new, talented athletes who are ready to give their best and make the state proud on the national stage.
”The Commission clarified that financial rewards for athletes are not automatic entitlements but discretionary incentives tied to exceptional performances.
It added that the government has consistently fulfilled statutory obligations, including payment of allowances, welfare packages, training support, and upkeep during competitions.
“It is disheartening that some individuals, including impostors parading themselves as spokespersons of the dissolved team, are attempting to mislead the public.
The generosity of Mr. Governor towards Lagos athletes must never be taken for granted or abused,” the DG warned, emphasizing that Lagos athletes have consistently received prompt allowances and grants.
The DG also disclosed that intelligence reports suggested the protest was deliberately staged after the Governor announced plans to host the victorious Under-15 Team Lagos, who recently won the national championship for the first time in the state’s history.
Condemning the assault on a Commission staff member during the protest, he vowed that those responsible would be identified and prosecuted.
“Those who assaulted our staff will be identified and will face the full wrath of the law. No grievance justifies resorting to violence or lawlessness,” he said.
He cautioned that any future acts of assault, harassment, or disruption of the Commission’s operations would attract immediate legal action.
According to him, discipline and adherence to due process are non-negotiable for the development of sports in Lagos State.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to raising a new generation of disciplined, competitive, and passionate athletes who will sustain Lagos’ tradition of sporting excellence.
