The Lagos State Government has signalled plans to strengthen teaching standards in post-primary schools through a proposed collaboration with a leading policy and governance institute.
Chairman of the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by officials of the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona School of Governance, an affiliate of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, at the Commission’s headquarters in Ikeja.
Peregrino, in a statement by Olusegun Olaoye, Head Public Affairs Unit, TESCOM on Tuesday, said the Commission is ready to collaborate with the institute in the area of human capital and capacity development for teachers in post-primary schools across the state.
“The Commission and, by extension, the Lagos State Government place a premium on the training and retraining of its workforce, especially teachers,” she said. “Collaborating with an institution of this calibre is a welcome development for us.”
She emphasised that continuous professional development remains central to improving the quality of teaching and learning outcomes in public secondary schools.
“We recognise that the quality of education is directly tied to the capacity of our teachers. That is why we are committed to ensuring they receive the right training and exposure,” Peregrino added.
Also speaking, Commissioner II representing Ikeja Division on the TESCOM Board, Abiodun Bamgboye, noted that the proposed partnership builds on an already existing relationship between the Lagos State Government and NIPSS in training senior public officials.
“There has been a longstanding collaboration between Lagos State and NIPSS in the training of top government functionaries on key policy issues,” he said. “We are delighted that this initiative is now being extended to the Teaching Service Commission.”
Similarly, the Permanent Secretary, TESCOM, Olawale Ojikutu, described the development as timely, noting that it would further strengthen institutional capacity within the education sector.
Responding, the Director of Research and Training at OSKASOG, Razaq Olabunmi, said the visit was aimed at exploring areas of collaboration, particularly in training teachers to enhance their effectiveness in the classroom.
“Our institute is primarily set up to engage in research and capacity development for high-level policymakers who advise government on critical issues,” he said. “However, we recognise the importance of extending these training programmes to educators who shape the foundation of society.”
Olabunmi explained that the institute has previously handled capacity development programmes for officials in both Lagos and Ogun states and is well-positioned to tailor its curriculum to meet the specific needs of teachers.
“We are ready to design training modules that address the peculiar needs of teachers in post-primary schools and help improve their teaching skills and overall performance,” he added.
He described the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona School of Governance as a flagship arm of NIPSS committed to strengthening governance and public sector efficiency through strategic training and research.
The meeting, held at TESCOM headquarters, had in attendance board members and management staff of the Commission, as well as members of the OSKASOG delegation, including administrative and public affairs officials.
