The Lagos State Government has assured that the proposed Lagos State Tenancy Bill 2025 will safeguard the rights of both tenants and landlords while creating a more attractive investment climate for the housing sector.
Speaking at a public hearing on the bill at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said the legislation aims to resolve longstanding disputes in landlord-tenant relationships by providing clear rights and obligations for all parties.
He commended the Assembly for its research and dedication, noting that the bill would build investor confidence, stimulate real estate financing, and accelerate housing development in the State.
Akinderu-Fatai highlighted key provisions, including mandatory registration of estate agents, capped agency and commission fees to prevent exploitation, the inclusion of virtual hearings to speed up dispute resolution, and enforceable Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) agreements.
He also welcomed provisions granting landlords the right to inspect and maintain premises with prior notice, while urging a review of requirements for compulsory premises insurance.
The hearing was attended by lawmakers, housing ministry officials, and key stakeholders from professional and real estate association.
