The Lagos State Government has announced the installation of a Smart Water Kiosk in the Akilo–Ifako Agege community as part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Akilo Micro Waterworks, a project expected to deliver safe and affordable water to more than 100,000 residents across the area.
The initiative, implemented by the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) in partnership with WaterAid, was disclosed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, via his official social media handle.
According to Wahab, the automated water kiosk is designed to dispense treated water from the upgraded Akilo plant using a reloadable smart card, allowing users to “tap to start, tap to stop,” ensuring that households only pay for the exact volume of water consumed.
“The kiosk will dispense treated water from the Akilo plant using a simple reloadable card – tap to start, tap to stop – so families only pay for what they use, with no guesswork and a clear record of every transaction,” Wahab stated.
He explained that the project is backed by detailed baseline and household studies to ensure that the water kiosks and future household connections are strategically positioned near homes and streets where demand is highest.
The commissioner added that the Smart Water Kiosk is one of several community water points being developed under the Akilo rehabilitation project, aimed at reducing reliance on unsafe wells and costly water vendors.
“This initiative will help make clean, affordable water easier to access for households in and around Akilo,” he noted.
When fully completed and commissioned, the Akilo Micro Waterworks is expected to strengthen water security in the area and support the state government’s broader goal of delivering safe, sustainable water solutions to underserved communities.
