The Lagos State Government has announced the commencement of the 21st edition of the Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition, reaffirming its commitment to literacy, academic excellence and youth development.

Briefing journalists, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, said the 2025 edition promises to be exceptional and fully aligned with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda.

He explained that concerted efforts have been made to elevate the competition’s standard and visibility across the State.According to Alli-Balogun, the Spelling Bee remains one of Lagos’ most anticipated academic platforms, offering students the opportunity to showcase their intellect, confidence and mastery of language.

He noted that the event is being organised by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) in collaboration with the New Era Foundation.

Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, Director, Private Education and Special Programmes, said the competition will hold at the Eko FM Multi-Purpose Hall, Agidingbi, Ikeja, on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, for the Junior Category (Primary School pupils), and Wednesday, December 3, 2025, for the Senior Category (Secondary School students).

“We are proud to promote literacy and language development among our young people, and this competition reflects our dedication to nurturing these essential skills,” Ogunmuyiwa stated.

He added that beyond generous cash prizes for outstanding spellers, the overall winner of the Senior Category will be crowned the Lagos State Spelling Bee Champion and will assume the prestigious role of One-Day Governor, a unique experience that exposes students to leadership and governance at the highest level.

Ogunmuyiwa further disclosed that a planning committee was inaugurated in October to ensure a seamless and impactful event. The committee, he said, has since engaged technical partners, including a seasoned quiz master, to uphold the competition’s integrity and high standards.

He assured that the 21st edition will be engaging, innovative and memorable, with new features designed to enrich the experience for participants, schools and guests.

“The Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition will continue to inspire excellence and nurture the next generation of leaders,” Ogunmuyiwa said.
