The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Monday responded swiftly to a fatal road accident at Volkswagen inward Mile 2, Lagos, involving a Toyota Highlander Jeep (APP 150 EY) and a painted T4 commercial bus (KJA 328 XH).
According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Taofiq Adebayo, preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred when the Highlander, travelling at high speed, lost control and rammed into the commercial bus, which was indiscriminately picking passengers along the roadside.
“The impact was fatal, as the driver of the Highlander Jeep unfortunately died instantly at the scene,” Adebayo confirmed.
He disclosed that LASTMA personnel promptly secured the accident scene, evacuated the victim’s remains, and handed them over to the Ojo Police Division, who later deposited the body at the C-Niger Mortuary, Abule Ado.
“Our officers immediately restored free vehicular movement along the gridlocked corridor and supervised the evacuation of all accidented vehicles to the Ojo Police Division for proper investigation,” Adebayo stated.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commiserated with the family of the deceased while warning commercial drivers against roadside passenger pickups. He further cautioned motorists on the dangers of speeding and poor vehicle maintenance.
“The sanctity of human life must never be compromised by recklessness on our highways. The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA, will continue to intensify enforcement and public enlightenment campaigns to forestall preventable tragedies of this nature,” he said.
