The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested a Togolese motorist who recklessly knocked down a pedestrian at the Adeniji Adele intersection, inward Ilubirin, Lagos Island, earlier today.
According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of a Mazda vehicle with registration number EPE 749 GS, was speeding unlawfully when he lost control and brutally struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the road.
“The impact left the victim badly injured and lying helplessly in a pool of blood,” Adebayo stated.
He disclosed that the driver attempted to flee the scene with his vehicle, but LASTMA operatives gave a swift chase, eventually apprehending him and handing him over to officers at the Adeniji Adele Police Division for further interrogation and prosecution.
Meanwhile, emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) evacuated the victim to the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for urgent treatment.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the reckless act and cautioned motorists against overspeeding. “Excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of avoidable tragedies on our roads.
We urge drivers to prioritize safety at all times,” he warned. While sympathizing with the victim, Bakare-Oki wished him a speedy recovery and reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring orderliness on Lagos roads.
