Clerics and Christian leaders from various denominations on Thursday converged in Lagos to declare that Nigeria remains “a nation loved by God,” as they offered fervent prayers for national unity, peace, stability and righteous leadership ahead of the 2027 political process.
The gathering, organised by a coalition of Christian non-governmental organisations under the aegis of the Christian NGOs Coordinating Council, was held at the Chapel of Christ the Light.
Special prayers were offered for President Bola Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as well as other political aspirants across the country.
The prayer summit, themed “A Nation Loved by God,” attracted worshippers, bishops, apostles and other faith leaders, who stressed the need for divine intervention in Nigeria’s socio-economic and political affairs.
Speaking at the event, the Coordinator of the group, Rev. Dr. Olufemi Sam Ogedengbe, said Nigeria was in urgent need of God-fearing leaders capable of governing with integrity, wisdom and compassion.
According to him, the summit was convened to seek divine direction for the country and to intercede for leaders and aspirants ahead of future elections.
“As Christians, what we can offer the nation at this critical time is to seek the face of God in raising good and spirit-filled leaders who will govern with divine counsel and direction. That is why we must begin praying earnestly before the election season fully begins,” he said.
Ogedengbe urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayers for the nation’s unity, security and prosperity, expressing confidence that God would raise leaders committed to justice, peace and national development.
Delivering an exhortation at the summit, the Presiding Chaplain of the Chapel of Christ the Light, Rev. Dr. Dele Ajayi, declared that despite prevailing national challenges, Nigeria still enjoys divine mercy and favour.
“Nigeria is a nation loved by God. There are still many reasons for us to appreciate Him. Prayer has continued to sustain this country and its people,” Ajayi said.
He further maintained that God remains sovereign over the affairs of the nation and would guide the emergence of leaders who would govern in the interest of the people.
“God has a plan concerning who will rule this nation. He will not choose someone who will not be good for the people because God will never give us what will destroy us,” he added.
Special prayers were also offered for national peace, economic recovery, security and unity across the country, with clerics urging citizens to remain hopeful and committed to Nigeria’s progress.
Among dignitaries and clerics present at the summit were Primate Olusoga, Bishop S.K. Okunade, Bush Shonibare, Primate Date Akindele, Archbishop Fatade, Apostle Father Adeniyi Adebayo, Rev. Mother Toyin, Baba Lesekese and several other Christian leaders.
