Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered the immediate relocation of pupils of Odokekere High School, Ikorodu, to nearby schools following the collapse of a classroom block in the school premises, to ensure that academic activities are not disrupted.
The Lagos State Government confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), describing the development as “sad news.”
The government, however, assured parents and members of the public that no casualty was recorded in the incident.
“No casualty was recorded at the building collapse. All of our students are in perfect condition,” the statement said.
According to SCRPS, the affected bungalow classroom block had already been marked for demolition as part of plans to replace it with a larger and more modern structure capable of accommodating the school’s growing student population.
The committee explained that the planned demolition was aimed at constructing “a befitting classroom edifice that will accommodate the huge population of students in the school.”
As part of immediate response measures, Governor Sanwo-Olu directed that pupils be temporarily relocated to nearby schools, while a team of SCRPS officials is expected to visit the school for an on-the-spot assessment.
The visit, the statement said, would enable the government to work out the necessary modalities to commence the immediate construction of an ultra-modern classroom block for the school.
SCRPS reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing safe, modern and conducive learning environments for students across Lagos State.
