The Abeokuta Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has urged the Ogun State Government to adopt renewable energy solutions, citing their potential to cut carbon emissions, reduce pollution and stimulate economic growth.
The Branch Chairman, Olumayowa Idowu, made the call on Tuesday, noting that a shift to renewable energy would enhance productivity, support businesses and improve power reliability across the State.
Idowu said Ogun State, with its growing industrial clusters and expanding residential communities, is well positioned to become a leader in solar energy adoption in Nigeria.
He spoke at the launch of a 6,000-watt solar-powered inverter system and an 18-seater Ford Transit bus, where he emphasised that scaling similar renewable energy solutions across major government offices could significantly reduce dependence on diesel generators, particularly in areas experiencing frequent power outages.
“Nigeria is entering a new phase where renewable energy is no longer optional; it is essential,” Idowu said. “Ogun State has the potential to lead in solar adoption with its industrial clusters and residential estates. If we scale renewable solutions, we will improve reliability, support businesses, reduce carbon emissions and drive economic growth.”
According to him, increased use of renewable energy would also help households and companies lower operating costs, delivering long-term savings on fuel consumption and electricity tariffs.
Idowu added that the NSE remains committed to supporting government infrastructure and development initiatives through innovation, digital transformation and the grooming of a new generation of skilled and competent engineers.
He also urged members of the society to continue to innovate, collaborate and embrace sustainable engineering practices capable of transforming both the profession and the wider society.
