A 200-level medical student, Ajibola Ibitayo, has reportedly taken his own life after failing his examinations for the second consecutive year.
The 21-year-old, who was studying Dentistry at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, reportedly injected himself at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun State.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement, revealing that results released yesterday showed Ibitayo would have to repeat Part Two for another academic session.
He had already been on the same level from the previous year. Ibitayo, whose father is a medical doctor, had reportedly struggled to cope with the setback.
Describing the incident as heartbreaking, Vice-Chancellor Professor Simeon Bamire urged parents and guardians to teach their wards that academic failure is not the end of life but a redirection towards future success.
He prayed for God’s comfort for the bereaved family, the Faculty of Dentistry, and the wider OAU community, calling the loss “irreparable.”
