Professor Is-haq Oloyede on Friday formally handed over the leadership of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to his successor, Professor Segun Aina, bringing to a close a decade-long tenure marked by far-reaching reforms in Nigeria’s tertiary admissions system.
The handover followed the expiration of Oloyede’s second and final term as Registrar on July 31, 2026.
President Bola Tinubu had approved the appointment of Aina on May 21, 2026, with the announcement made in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The appointment positioned Aina to take over the administration of the nation’s tertiary admissions body following the completion of Oloyede’s tenure.
Oloyede was first appointed Registrar of JAMB on August 9, 2016, by former President Muhammadu Buhari and was reappointed in 2021 for a second four-year term.
During his 10 years in office, he oversaw significant institutional reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability and operational efficiency in the conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and the nation’s admission process.
His successor, Professor Segun Aina, is a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, with extensive experience in digital infrastructure, examination technology and institutional transformation.
According to the Presidency, Aina earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, United Kingdom, before obtaining a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security and a doctorate in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University. He also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.
The Presidency said Aina brings over 15 years of experience in advising federal and state governments on digital transformation, systems design and public sector reforms.
He has also served as a consultant to major examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), where he contributed to strengthening ICT infrastructure and examination integrity.
Describing him as one of Nigeria’s youngest professors of Computer Engineering, the Presidency noted that Aina would also become the youngest Registrar in JAMB’s history.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that the new Registrar would build on the reforms initiated under Oloyede’s leadership while further modernising the Board’s operations and enhancing the credibility and efficiency of Nigeria’s tertiary admissions system.
