The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed deep concern over a serious traffic incident that occurred early Monday on the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge inward Maryland, along the Ikorodu Road corridor, leaving a delivery motorcyclist with a severe knee fracture.
According to LASTMA, the crash was triggered by disruptions caused by an earlier truck fire on the same bridge, which resulted in heavy traffic congestion across the Ikorodu Road axis.
Taofiq Adebayo, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, said preliminary findings showed that a private ambulance (BED 508 EA), carrying a pregnant woman on oxygen support, drove against traffic at high speed in an attempt to bypass the gridlock.
He said the driver’s reckless one-way movement led to a violent collision with a delivery motorcyclist lawfully riding in his lane, leaving the rider with “a grave and excruciating fracture to his right knee.”
Adebayo said LASTMA officers immediately activated emergency response procedures, alerting the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), which deployed two ambulances to the scene.
“The pregnant woman, along with her life-support equipment, was safely transferred into one LASAMBUS ambulance, while the second ambulance conveyed the injured motorcyclist to the nearest hospital for urgent treatment,” he said.
The LASTMA spokesperson added that the ambulance driver was arrested and handed over to officers of the Ogudu Police Division for interrogation and possible prosecution. Both the damaged ambulance and the wrecked motorcycle were removed from the road and transferred to the police station as part of ongoing investigations.
Adebayo noted that police operatives provided security support throughout the rescue operations to ensure the safety of responders and the preservation of evidence.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on driving against traffic, warning that the dangerous violation continues to cause avoidable injuries and deaths in Lagos. He urged ambulance and emergency-service drivers to strictly observe road-safety rules—especially when transporting medically vulnerable patients.
Bakare-Oki also wished the injured motorcyclist and the expectant mother quick recovery and restated LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring order on Lagos roads.
