The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, has called for stronger collaboration between the Police, traditional institutions, and local communities as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security and public trust across the country.
The IGP made the call on Friday during a courtesy visit to the palace of the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.
The visit, described by many as symbolic and historic, underscored the growing emphasis on community-driven policing and strategic partnerships between security agencies and traditional institutions in addressing emerging security challenges.
Speaking at the event, Disu expressed appreciation to the revered monarch for his continued support for security and policing efforts in Edo State.
According to the police boss, traditional rulers occupy strategic positions within society and remain critical stakeholders in promoting peace, social stability, and effective intelligence gathering at the grassroots level.
“Traditional institutions remain indispensable partners in our collective efforts to secure communities and strengthen public confidence in policing,” the IGP stated.
He added that the visit was not only official but also personal, noting his admiration for the history, culture, and enduring legacy of the ancient Benin Kingdom.
“As a student of history, I understand the rich heritage and historical significance of the Benin Kingdom, and I hold the throne and people of Benin in very high regard,” he said.
Disu stressed that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to deepen community policing strategies aimed at fostering trust, cooperation, and proactive crime prevention across the country.
“We cannot achieve effective policing without the support of the people. Security is a shared responsibility, and stronger collaboration between the Police, traditional rulers, and local communities remains essential to achieving lasting peace,” he added.
Responding, the Oba of Benin commended the Inspector-General for the visit, describing it as a significant demonstration of respect for traditional institutions and cultural heritage.
The monarch noted that it was uncommon for an Inspector-General of Police to personally visit the palace while in office, adding that the gesture reflected humility and leadership.
“This visit is significant and deeply appreciated. It reflects respect for tradition, culture, and the enduring relationship between the Police and the people,” the Oba stated.
The monarch further praised the IGP’s leadership qualities, discipline, and professional background, expressing optimism that the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership would continue to record positive reforms and operational successes.
“I believe your leadership qualities and professional experience will continue to inspire confidence among officers and strengthen the operational effectiveness of the Force,” the Oba added.
Following the palace engagement, the IGP proceeded to the Edo State Police Command Headquarters, where he was received by the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, and other senior officers.
Briefing the IGP, Agbonika highlighted ongoing security operations across the state, including aggressive bush-combing exercises, community policing initiatives, and strategic collaboration with local stakeholders and security partners.
The commissioner also commended the achievements of the Command’s tactical units, particularly the Violent Crime Response Unit, noting that recent operational successes were made possible through improved logistics support, personnel development, and strategic leadership from the Force Headquarters.
He, however, appealed for the IGP’s support with additional operational assets, including arms, ammunition, armoured personnel carriers, and advanced tactical training to strengthen the command’s capacity to tackle evolving security threats.
Addressing officers and personnel of the command, Disu assured them that the welfare of police personnel remained a top priority under his administration.
According to him, improving officers’ welfare and working conditions is critical to building a more professional, disciplined, and motivated police force.
“I understand the sacrifices officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force make daily in service to the nation. Their welfare remains extremely important, and we will continue to prioritise initiatives that improve their well-being and operational efficiency,” the IGP said.
He urged officers to remain professional, disciplined, and committed to ethical policing, while assuring them of sustained reforms aimed at strengthening the institution.
