Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has applauded the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) for a quarter-century of dedicated service, describing the agency as a pivotal force in the transformation of Lagos’ traffic landscape.

Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration held on Tuesday, at Eko Hotel and Suites, Governor Sanwoolu highlighted the agency’s journey from inception to becoming a model of modern traffic control and urban mobility management.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, the Governor said “When Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office in 1999, Lagos was grappling with chaotic traffic, frequent accidents, and a failing transport system.”

“It was under his visionary leadership that LASTMA was created in 2000—to restore sanity, safety, and efficiency to our roads. Today, we honour that bold beginning and the significant strides made since then.

”Reflecting on the agency’s evolution, Sanwo-Olu noted, “LASTMA has grown from a basic traffic unit into a sophisticated mobility management force, integrating cutting-edge tools like real-time monitoring, ANPR systems, and a digitized command center.

”He emphasized the economic and societal importance of efficient traffic flow, stating that “every minute saved in traffic adds value to our economy—streamlining supply chains, boosting productivity, and enhancing our competitiveness.

”Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the sacrifices of LASTMA personnel, calling them “the thin yellow line between order and chaos on Lagos roads.”

He paid tribute to fallen officers, promising continued government support for their families. “We owe a debt to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. Their sacrifice is not forgotten, and their legacy lives on.

”A highlight of the event was the Governor’s unveiling of the 20-Year Strategic Blueprint for Traffic Management, a forward-looking document aimed at preparing Lagos for the mobility demands of a rapidly urbanizing future.

“The LASTMA of tomorrow will be powered by AI, drone surveillance, and intelligent transport systems. This is not just about managing traffic but about reimagining movement across Lagos.

”Governor Sanwo-Olu also lauded the role of Lagos Traffic Radio 96.1FM, established in 2012, in extending LASTMA’s operational reach and educating road users.

“This partnership between LASTMA and the traffic radio station creates a responsive ecosystem that informs, engages, and protects millions of commuters.”

He appealed to all stakeholders—commuters, transport unions, businesses, and residents—to partner with government and embrace a culture of compliance.

“The journey continues, and the best is yet to come. Together, we will make Lagos the model for urban mobility in Africa.”
