Lagos State, Nigeria’s city of aquatic splendour, will today, October 3, host the Africa Blue Economy Summit, a landmark event expected to position Lagos and Nigeria as continental leaders in harnessing marine and freshwater resources for sustainable growth.

The summit, themed “Harnessing Africa’s Blue Natural Capital for Sustainable Growth”, will take place at Azuri Towers, Eko Atlantic City.

It will attract a distinguished line-up of global leaders, innovators, and policymakers, including Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu; football legend and philanthropist, Mr. Didier Drogba; Africa’s foremost industrialist and President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote; President and Chairman of Afreximbank, Prof. Benedict Oramah; and CEO/Co-Founder of the E1 Series, Mr. Rodi Basso.

In a statement on Thursday, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation and Chairman of the Technical and Operations Committee of the E1 Lagos GP, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the summit would provide concrete pathways for transforming Africa’s ocean and freshwater resources into sustainable engines of growth, combining visionary dialogue with actionable commitments.

“The Africa Blue Economy Summit – Lagos 2025 is the catalyst,” Osiyemi said. “It signals Africa’s leadership in blue carbon, regenerative economic growth, sustainable fisheries, ocean waste-to-value innovation, and coastal protection, positioning Lagos as the continental hub for innovation, investment, and collaboration.”

According to him, the gathering will convene Africa’s leaders, scientists, investors, entrepreneurs, and youth around a shared vision for a thriving, inclusive, and resilient blue economy.

He stressed that Africa’s marine and coastal natural capital must be recognised not only as critical ecological assets but also as strategic economic resources for climate adaptation, job creation, and regional prosperity.

One of the core pillars of the summit is the Thought Leadership Forum, designed as a high-level platform where policymakers, global ocean experts, financiers, innovators, and community leaders will share insights, challenge assumptions, and co-develop strategies for scaling Africa’s blue economy.
