Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to enhance flood resilience, safeguard lives and livelihoods, and strengthen Lagos’ capacity to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
The Governor made the call on Monday at the 2025 World Habitat Day celebration held at The Blue Roof, Lagos Television (LTV), Agidingbi, Ikeja, where he was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin.
Sanwo-Olu noted that this year’s theme, “Urban Crisis Response: Flooding in Focus,” was particularly relevant to Lagos as a coastal megacity facing increasing environmental challenges.
He emphasized that flooding had become a persistent urban concern that required proactive long-term planning, sustainable investment, and active community participation.
According to him, urban resilience remains a central pillar of the State’s development blueprint — the T.H.E.M.E.S.+ Agenda — with the Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO) spearheading policies and projects that address climate adaptation and flood-risk reduction.
The Governor urged private investors, development partners, and innovators to join forces with government in promoting a sustainable and climate-resilient Lagos, especially through initiatives such as mangrove restoration in coastal areas — citing the Dangote Group’s partnership as a commendable model.
“Investing in flood-resilient housing, smart drainage systems, renewable energy, and urban-risk insurance will not only safeguard our communities but also create new opportunities for economic growth,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to making Lagos not only livable but also sustainable for future generations.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, described World Habitat Day as a vital opportunity for governments and citizens to reflect on the state of human settlements and renew their commitment to sustainable urban development and inclusive city planning.
