Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has rewarded the two overall best graduating students of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions with N20 million each.
Sanwo-Olu announced the cash gifts on Wednesday at LASU’s 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremonies held at the university’s main campus in Ojo, Lagos.
The beneficiaries are Ayilara Olawale, who emerged as the best graduating student for the 2024/2025 academic session, and Adebanjo Oluolamide, who was adjudged the overall best graduating student for the 2025/2026 session.
Olawale, a graduate of Project Management Technology, finished with a 4.96 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and First Class Honours, while Oluolamide, who studied Aerospace Engineering, graduated with a 4.97 CGPA, also with First Class Honours.
Announcing the awards, Sanwo-Olu said the cash gifts were his personal contribution to recognise and encourage outstanding academic performance.
“Ayilara Lawal Olawale and Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide, each one of you will earn 20 million naira each,” the governor said.
According to a statement shared on X by the governor’s New Media aide, Jubril Gawat, the N20 million would be presented to each of the two graduates.
The recognition came days after Oluolamide received another N10 million cash prize from the Sunbeth Excellence Partnership Programme for emerging as LASU’s overall best graduating student for the 2025/2026 academic session.
Oluolamide’s latest recognition brings the total cash awards announced for his academic achievement to N30 million.
Speaking ahead of the convocation, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, had announced the two overall best graduating students at a pre-convocation briefing.
The university said more than 20,000 students would graduate across the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions during the combined convocation ceremonies.
Of the graduating students, 494 were awarded First Class Honours, reflecting the high level of academic performance recorded across the two sessions.
The governor’s gesture is expected to further highlight the importance of academic excellence and encourage students in Lagos State and beyond to pursue excellence in their studies.
