A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday warned activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, that his bail would be revoked if he makes any further inflammatory statements deemed harmful to national peace and security.
Justice Mohammed Garba Umar issued the warning while ruling on Sowore’s bail application, moments after he was arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on alleged defamation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his social media pages.
The Judge also barred Sowore, who contested for the presidency in 2019 and still has his passport deposited with the court, from making additional comments considered provocative or capable of inciting unrest.
Justice Umar ruled that Sowore qualified to be released on self-recognition, noting that he had previously been granted bail by the court and remained within its jurisdiction.
Sowore, represented by his lawyer Marshall Abubakar, pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).
According to the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025, Sowore is accused of violating provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, and the Criminal Code Act by allegedly referring to President Tinubu as a “criminal” in posts on X and Facebook.
Two social media companies—X Inc. (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook) Inc, were also listed as co-defendants in the case.
The matter was adjourned for further proceedings.
