President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose enduring contributions continue to shape Nigeria, Africa, and the global community.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President lauded Obasanjo’s lifelong commitment to national development and democratic governance as the former leader marks his 89th birthday on March 5.
President Tinubu said he rejoices with the former Head of State and civilian President, noting that Obasanjo’s “towering influence in the country, Africa, and beyond remains significant.”
The President highlighted Obasanjo’s record of service, recalling his stewardship as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, during which he handed over power to a democratically elected civilian administration in 1979. He also referenced Obasanjo’s return to office as the country’s first civilian President in the Fourth Republic from 1999 to 2007.
According to Tinubu, the former president’s historic experiences underscore his deep-rooted patriotism and sacrifice for the nation.
He cited Obasanjo’s role in preserving Nigeria’s unity during the civil war, his imprisonment for opposing military dictatorship, and his sustained advocacy for Africa’s political and economic advancement.
“As he turns 89, we acknowledge the zeal and wisdom he continues to bring to Nigeria’s development process through his books and regular national and international interventions,” the President said. “His reflections consistently reveal a depth of patriotism and commitment to nation-building.”
President Tinubu prayed for more years of good health, strength, and wisdom for the elder statesman, expressing hope that he would continue to offer guidance and service to the nation and humanity at large.
