The Governments of Ogun and Lagos states have confirmed that British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The confirmation was contained in a jointly signed statement by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information, Ogun State, and Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information, Lagos State.
According to the statement, the vehicle conveying Joshua and three other occupants ran into a stationary truck, resulting in the death of two persons.
“We sympathise with the families of those involved in the accident, and we pray that God will grant them the strength to go through this difficult time,” the statement read.
It added that Anthony Joshua and another passenger were immediately evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos, where they are currently receiving care.
“Doctors have conducted several clinical assessments and have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency interventions at this time,” the governments said.
The statement further disclosed that a comprehensive medical team has been constituted to continue monitoring the patients closely.
“Anthony Joshua has since been relating well with his family,” it added.
The two state governments assured the public that they are keenly monitoring the situation and will ensure that the injured persons receive the best possible medical care.
They also confirmed that investigations have commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
While appreciating the concern shown by members of the public, the governments appealed for privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family during the period.
