Senator Kaila Samaila, representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing persistent internal crises and factionalisation within the PDP that, according to him, have hindered his ability to perform effectively.
The lawmaker’s defection was conveyed in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read during Tuesday’s plenary.
In the letter, Senator Samaila said his decision to leave the PDP was driven by his commitment to national unity, development, and good governance, while also commending President Bola Tinubu for his “bold and transformative reforms” aimed at restoring economic stability and strengthening governance.“
The Peoples Democratic Party has gravely constrained my ability to discharge my constitutional responsibilities effectively and in good conscience,”the letter read in part.“
As one deeply committed to the service of our nation and the welfare of my people, I have found it necessary to realign my political engagements with a more progressive platform that embodies good governance, unity, progress, growth, and discipline in the governance of our country.”
Senator Samaila further stated that his decision to join the APC was informed by the need to support a government that is taking decisive actions to reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth.
“Consequently, I have chosen to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) and to lend my full commitment to the reforms of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu. I hold in high regard the bold and transformative reforms initiated by the President, aimed at restoring economic stability, strengthening governance, and repositioning our nation for sustainable growth,”he added.
The Bauchi North senator described President Tinubu’s leadership as “decisive and visionary,” noting that it represents the kind of direction Nigeria needs to move forward.
He also commended Senate President Akpabio for his “exemplary leadership of the 10th Senate” and pledged his full loyalty to his new party while reaffirming his dedication to national unity and development.
With Senator Samaila’s defection, the APC now holds 74 seats in the Senate, while the PDP has 27, the Labour Party (LP) four, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) two, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) one, and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) one, bringing the total number of senators to 109.
