Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has described Chief Olabode George, the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, as a formidable figure in Nigerian politics whose influence played a defining role in shaping his own political ascent.
The governor’s remarks were disclosed in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, on Saturday. Makinde spoke during the 80th birthday celebration of the former Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), held on Friday in Lagos.
Makinde recounted a pivotal moment in 2014 when Chief George intervened to save his governorship declaration after internal party forces attempted to frustrate the event. He said the elder statesman’s decisive action restored military approval for the use of the Ibadan Polo Ground just hours before the scheduled ceremony.
According to him, Chief George’s support not only kept the event alive but marked the beginning of his journey to the Oyo State governorship. “Today, I am standing in front of you as the Governor of Oyo State. So, let me publicly say thank you, Baba, for being part of my political journey,” he said.
Makinde praised the PDP stalwart as a resilient and battle-tested leader whose military background and life experiences have shaped his enduring relevance. He noted that despite facing numerous personal and political trials, Chief George has continued to emerge stronger.
“A lot of people know that Baba was in the military, and if you go through that crucible, up to becoming a General, you can never be a pushover,” he said, adding that the celebrant’s life exemplifies perseverance and unwavering commitment to service.
The governor also extended warm wishes to Chief George on behalf of the government and people of Oyo State. He urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the celebrant’s life journey, noting that challenges are part of life’s path, but what matters is reaching one’s destination safely. “God did not promise us a smooth journey, but He promised safe arrival. Baba’s life shows that, and God will take all of us to our destination safely,” he said.
The event attracted prominent political leaders, including the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed; revered monarchs such as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; captains of industry, and other distinguished guests who gathered to celebrate Chief Bode George’s legacy at 80.
