General Hospital Isolo has recorded a major medical milestone with the successful performance of the first minimally invasive endoscopic reconstructive middle-ear surgery in Lagos State.

The development was disclosed in a joint statement signed by Mordi Patricia (Public Affairs) and Dr Adebayo Adefolaseye, ENT Consultant, describing the feat as a significant breakthrough in the management of chronic ear diseases in the state.

According to the statement, chronic mucopurulent ear discharge remains a common medical condition in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, and is often associated with perforation of the tympanic membrane (eardrum).

While many cases are managed medically, definitive surgical cure has remained limited due to the technical complexity of treatment and a shortage of skilled specialists.

“For the first time in Lagos State, minimally invasive endoscopic reconstructive middle-ear surgeries have been successfully carried out by the ENT team of General Hospital Isolo,” the statement said.

The surgeries were performed by the hospital’s Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) team in collaboration with Dr Nkemjika Benjamin N., MBBS, FWACS, AFACS, a Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist and Head and Neck Surgeon based in the United Arab Emirates, alongside the hospital’s management team, ENT consultants, scrub nurses and anaesthesiologists.

The statement noted that post-operative care for the first set of tympanoplasty patients has been excellent, with stable and encouraging outcomes recorded so far.

“The patients are doing remarkably well, with significant improvement and positive ear outcomes following the reconstructive procedures,” it added.

The management and entire medical team of General Hospital Isolo, led by the Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Saliu Oseni, were commended for their professionalism, dedication and commitment in achieving the landmark procedure.

The statement further assured that as the programme enters its final week, the ENT team will continue to deliver high-quality care to patients.

“This achievement reinforces our commitment to improving access to advanced medical care and expanding specialist surgical services within Lagos State’s public health system,” the statement said.
