The Lagos State Taskforce has impounded 278 commercial motorcycles during a weeklong enforcement operation targeting operators violating the state’s ban on Okada activities on highways and other restricted routes.
The agency said the exercise was carried out in line with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, and forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security, protect lives and property, and curb criminal activities across the state.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs of the Lagos State Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the operation covered several strategic locations, including Ikorodu, Agric Bus Stop, Festac First Gate, Mazamaza, Iyana School, Iyana-Iba, Idimu Road, Egbeda, Kola Bus Stop, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun Roundabout, Ijaiye in Ojokoro, Berger Bus Stop, Ojodu, Akowonjo Roundabout, Igando Bus Stop, LASU-Iba Road and Pipeline Road in Idimu.
The statement noted that the enforcement drive followed an earlier clampdown on illegal commercial motorcycle operations and was aimed at sustaining compliance with the state’s transport and security regulations.
During the operation, several commercial motorcycle operators were arrested for illegally operating on highways and restricted routes in violation of existing laws.
The Taskforce said some of the riders were found transporting petroleum products, cooking gas and other hazardous materials, while others conveyed school children and toddlers in unsafe conditions on major roads.
At the end of the operation, a total of 278 motorcycles were impounded.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, said the agency would continue to intensify enforcement until full compliance with the law is achieved.
“We will not be cowed or fold our arms and allow people of criminal intent to overrun Lagos or surrender to their illegalities,” Akerele said.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing the state’s transport laws and maintaining public order, warning that violators would continue to face sanctions.
The Taskforce further disclosed that all impounded motorcycles would be processed for forfeiture to the Lagos State Government through the courts in accordance with the provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
The latest operation comes amid renewed efforts by the Lagos State Government and security agencies to enhance safety on major roads, reduce traffic-related risks and prevent criminal elements from exploiting commercial motorcycles for unlawful activities.
