The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued 353 victims of road accidents and emergencies in the first five months of 2026, warning motorists and other road users to exercise greater caution amid slippery roads and reduced visibility during the rainy season.
LASTMA said the victims were rescued through the swift interventions of its Rescue and Emergency Response Unit between January and May across various parts of the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Taofiq Adebayo, the rescued victims comprised 207 adult males, 137 adult females and nine male children who benefited from prompt emergency response efforts at accident scenes and other road-related emergencies.
Quoting the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, Adebayo urged motorists, commercial transport operators, motorcyclists and other road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations as rainfall intensifies across Lagos.
He noted that the rescue figures reflected the agency’s commitment to preserving lives while also highlighting the dangers associated with driving during adverse weather conditions.
The spokesman added that the rainy season often brings poor visibility, slippery road surfaces, reduced vehicle traction, flooded roads and mechanical failures, all of which increase the likelihood of crashes and emergencies.
“While we take pride in the successful rescue of 353 individuals within the first five months of the year, these incidents equally serve as a poignant reminder of the need for greater caution and responsibility on our roads, particularly during the ongoing rainy season,” Bakare-Oki said.
The General Manager added that many of the accidents could have been avoided through responsible driving practices and strict compliance with traffic regulations.
“A considerable number of these crashes could have been prevented through responsible driving habits, strict adherence to speed regulations, maintenance of safe driving distances, avoidance of reckless overtaking and routine vehicle maintenance,” he said.
The LASTMA boss advised motorists to ensure that critical vehicle components, including braking systems, tyres, windshield wipers, lights and steering mechanisms, are in good condition before embarking on journeys during the rainy season.
He also cautioned drivers against speeding on wet roads, noting that rainfall significantly increases braking distances and reduces tyre grip, thereby heightening the risk of collisions and loss of control.
Bakare-Oki further warned motorists against driving through flooded sections of roads without first assessing the depth and condition of such areas, noting that this often leads to accidents, vehicle breakdowns and other avoidable emergencies.
He commended members of the agency’s Rescue and Emergency Response Team for their professionalism and dedication, while also acknowledging the support of allied emergency agencies, healthcare personnel, security operatives and other rescue partners.
“Every life preserved is of immeasurable value. We therefore urge all motorists to make safety their foremost priority during this rainy season. Strict compliance with traffic regulations and responsible road conduct remain the most effective safeguards against avoidable tragedies and needless loss of life,” he said.
He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to strengthening its emergency response capabilities through continuous personnel training, the deployment of modern rescue equipment and enhanced collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
The General Manager assured residents of the agency’s readiness to respond swiftly to emergencies and ensure the smooth flow of traffic across the state despite the challenges posed by the rainy season.
