The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has issued a stern warning to the public, urging residents not to assault, intimidate, or obstruct its enforcement officers while carrying out their official duties.
The statement, signed by LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, on Thursday, cited recent incidents in which enforcement personnel were threatened or attacked during environmental sanitation operations.
According to Sanusi, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, expressed concern over the assaults, describing them as unacceptable acts that undermine public order and environmental governance.
“Our enforcement officers are deployed to protect public health, enforce waste management regulations, and maintain the cleanliness of Lagos,” Gbadegesin said. “Any violence or intimidation against them will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
The LAWMA boss emphasized that the Authority’s operations are supported by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017. He warned that individuals or groups found attacking officers or disrupting lawful enforcement activities would face arrest and prosecution.
Gbadegesin urged residents to cooperate with LAWMA officials, follow proper waste disposal guidelines, and report environmental infractions through official channels rather than taking matters into their own hands.
He also called on community leaders, market associations, and transport unions to support the Authority’s efforts in promoting order, safety, and environmental responsibility across Lagos State. “LAWMA remains resolute in its mandate to deliver a cleaner, healthier, and more liveable city for all residents,” he added.
