The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has praised the state government for upgrading healthcare infrastructure in Ukanafun Local Government Area, describing the intervention as a major boost to medical services and community well-being.
In a statement issued in Uyo on Monday, the NMA Chairman, Dr. Aniekan Peter, commended Governor Umo Eno for approving the installation of an MRI machine and dialysis units at the newly commissioned Ikot Akpankuk General Hospital.
Dr. Peter said the development marks a significant step toward strengthening secondary healthcare in the state.
“This intervention brings real relief to the people of Ukanafun who, for many years, lacked a functional general hospital and had to travel far for routine and emergency care,” he said. “With these upgrades, the community will now have access to advanced diagnostic services and kidney care within their locality.”
He added that the governor’s action reflects “a clear commitment to equitable healthcare and the well-being of our people,” noting that the NMA stands in support of ongoing efforts to build a stronger health system in the state.
The association also acknowledged the role of the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem John, for driving the administration’s healthcare vision and supporting the steady growth of service delivery across the state.
Governor Eno last week unveiled the first-ever functional general hospital in Ukanafun since the creation of the council in 1976, alongside approving the installation of modern diagnostic and kidney care facilities.
